Now famous for sports eyewear, Carrera was founded in 1956 in Austria by Wilhelm Anger. He was inspired by the Carrera Panamericana auto race and his designs for eyewear were heavily influenced by the sleek and sporty style of the auto racers.
Twenty years into what was a successful and growing business, Carrera changed its name into Optyl International and began specializing in ski masks and motorcycle goggles. In the early 1960s, Wilhelm invented and patented the “Optyl” material which became a revolutionary design in eyewear. 20% lighter, sustaining a permanent elasticity and reducing allergic reactions for wearers; the Optyl frames were a huge success and are now one of the most famous eyewear brands of all time. Used now for sports and fashion eyewear, Carrera frames are some of the best quality available in the market.
